English

harina [27]3 years ago

Answer:

The best revision of the sentence is the following one: After going over the recipe, I believed the cake would be easy to make.

Explanation:

The sentence above is the best revision of the sentence because it clearly states the word modified by the PP "after going over the recipe". The person going over the recipe is the speaker, grammatically expressed by the personal pronoun "I". In English sentences, the doer of the action must be the subject of the main clause that follows.

"After going over the recipe, it seemed (...)" has a double subject: The pronoun "it" and the clause "the cake would be easy to make". Then the sentence "the cake seemed easy after (...)" is not a natural construction. It sounds odd. What is more, the last version with the parenthetical content also sounds odd because it does not mention who finds the cake easy to make.

Predict how you feel time, place, weather, and colors will play a key role in setting the Dystopian tone in 1984.
NeTakaya

Setting and tone/mood can be seen to go hand in hand, so to speak.  For instance, a scene of a story or poem that takes place in a field of flower on a bright and sunny day would contribute to a tone of happiness.  That said, the time _1984_ occurs is in the future for the characters of the novel.  The place is London, and the weather and color are, respectively, dreary and gray.   Because the future can never be known for sure, this uncertainty contributes to the dystopian tone.   Likewise, when one thinks about the miserable nature for people that would be caused by a dystopian society, bright and sunny are not what one might generally think.   Setting in _1984_ contributes to the tone of dystopia because when one pictures what a dystopia might look like, smoggy, foggy, and gray are probably what come to mind.

COUNTY ATTORNEY (with the gallantry of a young politician).
dexar [7]

Answer:

The correct answer is D. It characterizes the County Attorney as someone desirous of showing respect to women, even if he does not mean it.

Explanation:

The question refers to Glaspell's 'A Jury of Her Peers,' in which a woman kills her husband because of her unhappiness with the marriage. Namely, the woman felt trapped, helpless, cornered in this marriage even though the husband didn't physically or mentally abuse her. She felt as though her freedom was taken from her and it all culminated in her killing him, even though he was supposedly a good man.

The police comes to investigate the scene, along with the County Attorney and several neighbors. These neighbors, namely women, understand the motives behind the murder and are actually the ones to solve it whereas the men don't want to take them seriously. The County Attorney shows 'the gallantry of a young politician,' meaning that he pretends to respect what the women are trying to say, even though he doesn't really respect them. Politicians are stereotypically known to lie and hide their true thoughts, which is why the term is used here.

Nataly [62]

Answer: Because Antonio Meucci was a trained engineer, he was able to invent a “talking telegraph.”

Explanation: This is the correct answer because the cause of his invention is the fact that he is a trained engineer, and the effect is the creation of the talking telegraph.
