True because Gasoline or diesel fuel are petroleum based end products, thus it is oil. Water don't mix with oil and oil has the tendency to float on the top of water allowing the fuel to remain ignited. If you try to put water on a fuel fire, you would actually cause the fire to spread, because the oil is going to go immediately to the top of the water, and go where it goes. Water will only move the fuel around, spreading the fuel fire and causing more damage. Better smother the fire with something non-flammable such as a safety blanket, flour, baking soda, soil, or use a proper fire extinguisher.

Bond [772]

                                          London, UK 2016

The quiet dripping disturbed the otherwise silent alley. Caroline stepped to the side to avoid tripping over a man on the street. She opened the door at the end of the street, and stepped inside.

"You're late!" A man's voice said as he stepped from the shadows.

"Sorry, I lost track of time."

"Well, you've got a new case, so I'd stop being late if I were you."He said.

"Jack, I'm never late when I'm on a case."

Jack sighed and handed her an envelope. Caroline opened it and read through it.

"Lucinda Waseford, dead in her parlor room. Let's see, she was found by her sister, stabbed in the back." She read.

"Yup, and you've been hired to investigate!" Jack said, "Now get to it, the sister is expecting you at 2 o'clock."

Turning the corner of Deals Gateway Av. Caroline looked up. Several historic buildings lined the street. 159 Deals Gateway Av. She walked up to a beautiful brick building, and rang the doorbell. A pretty blonde woman with a pleasant face opened the door.

"Oh...You must be the detective. Come on in." She said.

Caroline stepped through the white framed door, but as she stepped in, she noticed a small red mark on the frame.

"Wait a minute! What's this mark?"She cried.

She took a closer look and a similar mark on the hand rail next to the door.

Bas_tet [7]

Answer:

The most effective substitution for the phrase "This was probably due to" in this sentence is - This discrepancy can be attributed in part to. The correct option is Option C.

Explanation:

This particular sentence from the excerpt taken from the 2000 California Census is a person’s opinion about the reason for a particular discrepancy.

In the sentence, someone is stating that something must have happened because of the high unemployment rates in the timber-related industries in the year 2000 and thus, uses the phrase "This was probably due to” which indicates someone’s own thoughts about something. Due to this, option C fits as the best substitution for this phrase.

Study the editorial cartoon Mars Probe by Mike Keefe. On another planet, 3 aliens are playing baseball, and one holds a baseball
gayaneshka [121]

Answer:

The alien with the baseball bat contributes to the effectiveness of the cartoon because:

B. It uses humor to show that unknown factors keep damaging the probes humans send.

Explanation:

Keefe finds a funny and, of course, improbable explanation as to why probes sent from Earth are constantly being damaged. In his cartoon, aliens play baseball. If that weren't funny enough, they are doing it with the purpose of breaking the probes. In a way, Keefe is using something that many people have most likely wondered: What if aliens do exist, but they do things that keep us from finding out about them?
