givi [52]

The Lincoln–Douglas debates (also known as The Great Debates of 1858) were a series of seven debates between Abraham Lincoln, the Republican candidate for the United States Senate from Illinois, and incumbent Senator Stephen Douglas, the Democratic Party candidate. At the time, U.S. senators were elected by state legislatures; thus Lincoln and Douglas were trying for their respective parties to win control of the Illinois General Assembly. The debates previewed the issues that Lincoln would face in the aftermath of his victory in the 1860 presidential election. Although Illinois was a free state, the main issue discussed in all seven debates was slavery in the United States.

After reading through the article “Alabama Unjust Constitution” why do some consider the constitution as having a “shameful star
const2013 [10]

Many people consider the Alabama state constitution to have had a shameful start because of the position it took when it came to racial issues.

The opening of the constitution stated that its objective was to establish "white supremacy" in the state, within the limits of the federal constitution. It also defended the removal of voting rights of African Americans and poor whites. Therefore, it attempted to benefit only a few people, those with the most power and privilege in society.

I agree that this is a shameful start. Even though much of the hateful and racist parts of the constitution have been removed, the establishment of such laws most likely left a negative impact on the society of the state. It also halted the state's progress by affecting the public school system and the social mobility of many people.
