The excess fertilizer (nitrogen and phosphorous) can enter the water ways and excess nutrients in the water bodies leads to the growth of algae. The growth of algae in water is very fast due to abundant amount of nutrients like phosphorous and nitrogen in water.

This depletes the oxygen level of the water bodies as the algal bloom forms a layer on the water and the aquatic plants and animals in water lacks oxygen for their growth.
