Read the excerpt from Rudolfo Anaya’s essay “Take the Tortillas Out of Your Poetry.” Tortillas and poetry. They go hand in hand.

Books nourish the spirit, bread nourishes our bodies. Our distinct cultures nourish each one of us, and as we know more and more about the art and literature of the different cultures, we become freer and freer. . . . I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like to sample different ethnic foods, the breads of many many groups; just as many of us enjoy sampling books from different areas of the world. I travel to foreign countries, and I know more about myself as I learn more about my fellow human beings. Censorship imposes itself in my path of knowledge, and that activity can be justified by no one. Which phrase from the excerpt best uses persuasion? “about the art and literature of the different cultures” “I travel to foreign countries, and I know more about myself” “Our distinct cultures nourish each one of us” “just as many of us enjoy sampling books from different areas”

The phrase which best uses persuasion in the excerpt above is this: I TRAVEL TO FOREIGN COUNTRIES AND I KNOW MORE ABOUT MYSELF. Persuasion is the action or process of persuading someone to do or believe something. In the above passage, the writer is persuading his readers by his own experience to believe that we can know ourselves more by reading literature from other cultures.

Narrative 5. Write a story which includes the sentence: We were amazed when we heard how lucky Shane had been.'
Margaret [11]

Answer:

When the school year ended, Shane, Austin, and I went straight to the beach and threw an "end-of-the-year party." It was, pretty crazy honestly. After the party, we all went to Austin’s house and continued it there since the police had said we couldn’t drink at the beach. The party DJ, Omar, was blasting music. The party didn’t end until the morning. Since Austin’s parents were out for the week, we had his house to ourselves. So, after the last party ended, we cleaned up and got the house ready for tonight’s party. It was a difficult task but we managed to complete it before 10 PM. This time, the party was even crazier than the last one. There were drinks, food, music, a pool bar, and the best part is that the music was blasting. Around 2:30 in the morning, the police showed up, started to detain everybody. Some people ran out of the house but some weren’t so lucky. Apparently, Shane jumped out of the window and ran into the avenue a little further behind Austin’s backyard. We were amazed when we heard how lucky Shane had been. He was the only one of us who got lucky, though. My parents had to pick up Austin and me and I was grounded for the rest of the summer. Austin’s parents didn’t ground him for too long, his only punishment was to clean the house.  I’m pretty sure none of us regretted throwing the parties."
