Most European countries were in expansion of conquest, and Africa was a found ground for it. Many Africans were kidnapped from Western Africa and brought to Portugal. But a reason can be for the economic prosperity the slave trade brought to those countries.

One main reason why slave-trading greatly expanded beginning around the 1500s Europeans started depending on slaves for free labor in new colonies.

Further Explanations:

The most prominent reason behind the expansion of slave trading was that the Europeans began depending upon the workforce of slaves in their new colonies. The South Atlantic and Caribbean economy relied upon the laborer for the cotton production and it is a well-known datum that cotton production requires lot of manpower. The slaves that were brought to these colonies were compelled to works in the fields without being paid.

During the 1550 first consignment of slaves was sent from West Africa to America. It unlocked the path for Arabs, European and African merchants to get involved in slave trade and expand it. They began to peddle slaves as though they were goods like ivory, gold, and spices. The African slaves were mostly transported to America through the Atlantic Ocean and for that reason, it was also known as the Atlantic slave trade.
