x² + 2x = 8            2/2=1; 1²=1, then you add to both sides of the equation

x²+ 2x+ 1 = 8 + 1    factor (x+1)(x+1)     

(x+1)² = 9    square root both sides

√(x+1)² = √9

x+1= 3     or      x+1 = -3
x= 3- 1              x= -3-1
x= 2                  x= -4
