They are about 40% to 60% of the total granulocytes in mammals.They play a vital role in immunity (protection from infections). In the case of an infection, they act as first responders, hence they form the essential part of the innate immunity.

Neutrophils are also referred to as phagocytes. They are able to ingest microbes or any foreign particles. They attach, engulf and kill microorganisms by the process called phagocytosis.  In general, neutrophils play an antimicrobial function
