Explanation: These shanty towns were derogatorily named "Hoovervilles" after U.S. President Herbert Hoover (1929-1933), since they were improvised and deficient slums built in the United States during the Great Depression, which started when Hoover became President - and many people blamed him for it. Extremely poor people, homeless and unemployed, lived in them, often crowded together in small shacks. For the most part the shacks were built with cheap and unsuitable materials, and the living conditions in them were unhealthy and very unpleasant. Some of these shanty towns got to accommodate thousands of people.
