According to Woodrow Wilson Self Determination means that every national group had to have its own country and the people must determine in which country they must live. He advocated a fourteen point speech, the purpose of which is to restore international peace and he called America to join in the League of Nations.

Wilson was trying to gain support from the people rather than to the senate stating that he desired to spread international peace by forming League of Nations. He used rhetoric by raising the emotions of the public on account of war sacrifices made by the people and also highlighting the brutality of the WWI. This molded the public’s outlook.

To obtain approval and final consent for forming the League nations was the primary Goal. His vision was enacted after the World War I by effectively creating an international organization which aimed for settling international disputes.

Answer:

Wilson's Fourteen Points were based on a major idea—the principle of self-determination, under which nationalities would have their own states. The members of a nationality or ethnic group share a cultural heritage, often associated with the place of its members' birth or descent.
