From these answers, I think that the best one would be "It shows that the writer's memory is imperfect and sets up the reason for the trip. It is not the first one, because it is just a guess that he is old. It is not the second one, because the writer knows how to write, just not what to write about. It is not the final one, because in the text it does not say that memory is a better source of writing.
