In The Hunger Games, Peeta and Haymitch’s relationship is very complex. It is very confused by utility and often it is hard to tell whether Peeta is doing things out of kindness or hope to receive something useful in return from Haymitch. Towards the beginning it is utility based but he still acts kindly towards Haymitch and does more than one would for a utility based relationship. The relationship then evolves into an emotional and charismatic one because haymitch favors Peeta over Katniss and peeta doesn’t treat him as a tool but a person. A utility based relationship is one in which one or both parties are catering to the other in an attempt to gain something. Peeta’s relationship with Hatmitch is confused by utility because Haymitch has information and will be in a helpful position once the games start.
In regards to the beginning of the novel Haymitch and Peeta do not necessarily have any relationship outside of the necessary one in order for Peeta to get by. This is a utility relationship based on Peeta’s need for information regarding the games. “So I’m pondering the reason why he [Peeta] insists on taking care of haymitch and all of a sudden I think, It’s because he's being kind. Just like he was kind to give me the bread.” (Collins 49) This quote shows that Katniss consciously is deciding to not do more for Haymitch because she only needs him for information while Peeta is taking care of him. Whether Peeta is doing it only to gain information and support is not very clear but it is a possibility. Due to Peeta's kindness he receives more information and guidance from haymitch that helps him to gain more support and pity that helps him later in the games.
