The story of Rip Van Winkle contains exaggerated characters such as the townspeople. Mysterious events such as when Rip is in the woods and thinks he can hear his name being called but only sees a crow while trying to see who it is. Also the remote setting helps the story to achieve more mystery and incorporate some aspects of witchcraft.
