Revolutions have both long-term and immediate causes. This was true of the 1789 French Revolution that temporarily overturned the monarchy. As you might recall, the ideas of the Enlightenment and discontent with the monarchy were the long-term causes of the French Revolution. But the immediate cause of the revolution was France's economic crisis. This crisis led to the meeting of the Estates General and the declaration of the Third Estate as the National Assembly.
