Elizabeth Bishop is considered one of the best American poets of the 20th century. She published her first book of poetry in 1946 and wrote until her death in 1979. “The Fish” is one of her most famous poems.

The speaker catches a huge fish. She studies her catch for a long time and while she is considering what to do about the fish, the steady progression of colours comes with the appearance of the rainbow.
