The Texan commander was Sam Houston and the Mexican Army commander was Antonio Lopez de Santa. At the Battle of San Jacinto, Santa Anna, the president of Mexico was captured and then was released, when he declared that the Mexicans leave the Texan region. Texas at the time was seen as an independent country at the time. This was done through a peace treaty in the declaration.
