The correct answer is A) many Cherokee died along the journey.

In 1838, the U.S. Army forced thousands of Cherokee people to march to the Indian Territory (in present-day Oklahoma) as part of the removal process. The statement that BEST explains why the route to the Indian Territory became known as the "Trail of Tears" is many Cherokee died along the journey.

It was US President Andrew Jackson who favored the removal of Native American Indians from their territories. In 1830, he passed the Indian Removal Act. As part of the Removal from their territories to the Indian territory of what today is Oklahoma, in 1838 about 15,000 Cherokees had to walk long distances in what was known the "Trail of Tears." Many of them died due to the harsh conditions.
