4x + y = -23
---------------
-x - y = -1 (result of multiplying by -1)
4x + y = -23
---------------add
3x = - 24
x = -24/3
x = -8 <====

X + y = 1        from this:      x = 1 - y

4x + y = -23

Substitute x = 1 - y into the second equation.

4x + y = -23

4*(1 - y) + y = -23

4 - 4y  + y = -23

4 + y - 4y = -23

4 - 3y = -23

-3y = -23 - 4

-3y = -27

y = -27/-3

y = 9

Recall: x = 1 - y,  substituting y = 9

x = 1 - 9

x = -8

x = -8, y = 9

Noah is learning portugese, and he uses flash cards to study vocabulary. For every 5 new flash cards he practices, he reviews 10
tresset_1 [31]
<h3>Answer:  15</h3>

=========================================================

Explanation:

n = number of new flash cards practiced

2n = number of old flash cards practiced

The 2n is due to the fact that the number of old flash cards is double that of the new ones (eg: 10 is twice that of 5).

The two expressions must add to 45.

new + old = total

n + 2n = 45

3n = 45

n = 45/3

n = 15

2n = 2*15 = 30

Noah practiced 15 new flash cards and 30 old flashcards which is a total of 15+30 = 45. This confirms our answer.

Also note that the ratio of new to old is 15:30 which reduces to 1:2, then we can multiply both sides by 5 to get 5:10. This effectively shows that 15:30 and 5:10 are the same equivalent ratio (just in different forms). This helps confirm our answer.

-1 + n=8(n+6) what does n equal?
Gelneren [198K]
<span>-1 + n=8(n+6)
Use distributive property
-1 + n= 8n + 48
Subtract n from both sides
-1= 7n + 48
Subtract 48 from both sides
-49= 7n
Divide 7 on both sides so that the only thing remaining on the right sides is the varible n.
Final Answer: -7 = n</span>
