Read the paragraph, which is a summary of a slave narrative by Olaudah Equiano. [1] Robert King was a Quaker merchant and a kind

man, and he treated Equiano well. [2] He used Equiano to work at a number of jobs for him, yet he also hired him out to other merchants. [3] A certain boat captain of King's, Thomas Farmer, often traveled between the West Indies and North America, so he needed Equiano's services. [4] Because Equiano had sea-going experience, he could be quite useful to Farmer. Which sentence in the paragraph is structured differently than the others?

In Chapter 15 of To Kill a Mockingbird, what does it mean in Maycomb when grown men stand outside in the front of the yard? Also
Digiron [165]
Scout, in her mature naivete, states what it means quite succinctly:

In Maycomb, grown men stood outside in the front yard for only two reasons: death and politics. I wondered who had died. Jem and I went to the front door, but Atticus called, "Go back in the house."

The reflects the kind of small-town mentality exhibited throughout the story. Men only call you out into your yard to relay the news of a death, or to express support or disapproval for political candidates and causes. Scout doesn't understand the true nature of the mob appearing (although she will later in the chapter), so she asks "who had died." Atticus clearly does understand, as he orders his children back into the house.

Aunt Alexandra does not directly state her thoughts on Tom's innocence of guilt, but she does express her ideas about Atticus defending him. Scout relates that she heard the end of a conversation between Atticus and Aunt Alexandra, in which Atticus tells her that he's:

". . . in favor of Southern womanhood as much as anybody, but not for preserving polite fiction at the expense of human life," a pronouncement that made me suspect they had been fussing again.

I sought Jem and found him in his room, on the bed deep in thought. "Have they been at it?" I asked.

"Sort of. She won't let him alone about Tom Robinson. She almost said Atticus was disgracin' the family Scout.

Thus, it doesn't really matter to Aunt Alexandra whether or not Tom is innocent, or whether or not he gets a fair trial. All she cares about, as she proves time & time again, is the family name. To her, Atticus' defense of a black man is akin to disgrace for an old, established family like the Finches. Of course, she may truly think Tom deserves a fair trial, but she doesn't want her brother to be the one to ensure he gets it.

Hope this helped! (;

Read the passage from When Birds Get Flu by John DiConsiglio. Dr. Dowell says that we need to be prepared for a pandemic. He thi
Wittaler [7]

This question is missing the options. I've found the complete question online. It is the following:

Dr. Dowell says that we need to be prepared for a pandemic. He thinks every nation should have an emergency  plan. More medications like Tamiflu should be available. He thinks rich countries like the U.S. should help poor  countries pay for medicine and health care.

Why does the author most likely include this information at the end of the text instead of at the beginning?

A. because it draws a conclusion based on the evidence presented throughout the text

B. because it offers new evidence that is meant to help readers better understand the text

C. because it poses new questions for readers to think about now that they have read the text

D. because it offers supplemental information that readers can compare to evidence presented in the text

Answer:

The author includes this information at the end of the text:

A. because it draws a conclusion based on the evidence presented throughout the text .

Explanation:

After discussing and presenting evidence throughout the text, author John DiConsiglio is now ready to conclude it. What he presents at the end cannot be new evidence or supplemental information, for that would not be a conclusion at all. He is also not presenting questions - he is making statements. Those statements are based on the information presented previously, supported by it. What the author wants now is to show how important that information was and how we can use it to be prepared for future cases of the disease.

1. Miss Emily Grierson represents the ideal of a "Southern
Masja [62]

Miss Emily Grierson is a traditional Southern belle who is imprisoned by a culture that wants to keep her in her place and a controlling father who wants her to submit to his authority.

The Southern hospitality, nurturing of beauty, and fli-rty yet chaste manner are traits that define the Southern belle persona. Sallie Ward, for instance, was referred to as a Southern belle and was born into planter class in Kentucky during the antebellum era.

Southern heritage is a major theme in "A Rose for Emily," as Faulkner employs symbols to show how reluctant the South was to abandon its traditional customs just after Civil W-ar. The Grierson family & their house are artefacts from the past that serve as a symbol of the Southern aristocracy's waning power.
