Dramatic irony is the name given to a literary device by which the reader knows some piece of information that is unknown to the characters. This is usually achieved through the structure of the text. The way the author arranges the events leads to the characters not knowing as much information as the reader. This leads to them to take some action that they would not take if they had the same information the reader has.
