In the article, Roger Cohen writes, "Revolutions, Islamic and otherwise, seldom deliver on all of their promises, and a clear ex

ternal enemy can serve as a useful diversion from internal problems." Identify at least one other revolution from your study of history that supports Cohen's claim and explain it is an example.

An example of a revolution that fits this claim is the Cuban Revolution. The promise of implementing communism in the island was at the heart of the revolution in the beginning. This was considered to be the best way to liberate the country from the control of foreign powers and Cuban oligarchies.

Initially, the revolution was supported by a lot of the people of Cuba, and it did deliver many of its promises. However, it fell short when compared to all the promises it had made at the beginning. The revolution was also able to find a clear external enemy in the United States. Although Cuba had reason to complain about the United States, this was used by the revolution as a diversion for its many other problems.

To prove the importance of freedom and true rights for the new Americans, Thomas Jefferson composed the Declaration of Independence strategically to get the point across. Excluding the introduction, the Declaration has three important assets. First we the actual declaration or list of the natural rights they had as humans. They were rights that could not be taken away from them including “ Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” inspired by John Lockes theory in the Enlightenment. A list of complaints against the king followed up. The British King lived up to the title of an absolute Tyranny to the Americans eye who continues to neglect the people’s basic rights. Finally, the Declaration had a resolution of independence to end it. Jefferson wrote that the “United Colonies are... and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States”. On July 4th this Declaration was approved which changed the American government completely.

The story of the 47 Ronin is a real historical account of Japan. Its author wanted to reinstate in the modern times that there is more to human life than the repetitive existence and work. People must find in themselves a deeper sense of existence, a deeper meaning in life, an unending adherence to a long history of culture and loyalty. The Japanese ronin existed in an era in Japan where there were no more wars to fight. The samurai was regarded as a warrior class that earns deep respect from the people. In fears that the Japanese spirit might be slowly slipping away, it is very timely that the story of the 47 Ronin is retold. Should the author have existed in feudalistic Europe, the story would have been different because in Europe, treatment of knights is very different. The knights were given land titles to govern. Knighthood is only given to the noblemen. It is more of a status quo rather than a binding story for loyalty and respect.
