It is true that the serfs were not able to own the land they farmed.

Farmers worked for other people lands. That is what they did. Farmers were poor people and did not have any property, They had to work the land of the landlords, and they received a low wage. There were landlords that were more benevolent and paid them better them a little bit more and also let the farmers keep a portion of the crops.
