1.  Imperialism

A. The domination by one country of the political, economic, and/or cultural life of another country or region.

D. The type of colonial rule favored by the French. In this type of colonial rule, officials and soldiers from the imperial county were sent to control the colony.

B. This type of colonial rule was favored by the British. In this type of colonial rule, local rules such as kings or sultans were left in place to govern the colonies. The British felt that this would lessen the possibility of a revolt.  

4.  protectorate

C. A form of imperial rule in which local rulers were left in place but were expected to follow the advice of imperial advisors on issues such as trade or missionary activity. These countries are still independent countries but they are under the protection of the more powerful imperial country.  

5.  spheres of influence

E. An area in which an outside power claims exclusive trading rights with an area. These privileges were expected to be honored under the threat of military force.
