Fore people are known to have lived in the the Okapa District of the Eastern Highlands Province, Papua New Guinea. They were predominantly farmers, numbering over twenty –thousand in total population, split across north Fore and south Fore regions respectively.  

Paul Ekman, an American contemporary psychologist who studied the relationship between emotions and facial expressions decided to study the Fore tribe with his colleague Friesen (in 1971). They were able to establish that the Guinean tribe under study were able to recognize the faces of emotions that were posed by westerners. This highlights Darwin’s stands that facial expressions are universal among humans.
