How does refraction cause wave crests to move when the waves approach the shore?

History

Refraction is bending of waves, which occurs due to different depths of water below the wave. The wave crest in the deeper water is grabbed up so that the top of wave crest tends to become parallel to the shore. Wave refraction also occurs around the circular island. Friction with the sea bed, when the waves approach the shore, causes distortion and breaking of the wave front, as the wave velocity decreases due to friction.
