Las polis Griegas era el nombre con el que se identificaban a las "ciudades-estado" de la antigua Grecia. Atenas y Esparta fueron las dos polis o ciudades estado más importante de esa gran época. Particularmente, Atenas, fue considerada la ciudad más intelectual en donde prominentes filósofos como Sócrates, Platón, y Aristóteles desarrollaron sus conceptos filosóficos y compartieron su filosofía. La organización de estas ciudades permitía a las personas con aptitudes para el combate, convertirse en guerreros y defensores de la polis, así como permitía que los estudiosos siguieran por el camino del estudio de la filosofía al seguir a uno de tantos filósofos de la época.
