After the unification of Germany rejected Austria and the German Austrians from the Prussian-dominated German Empire in 1871, the notion of Anschluss, meaning a unified Austria and Germany that would establish a Greater Germany, begun spreading.

After WWI,  the Republic of German-Austria failed to form a union with Germany, because of the Treaty of Saint Germain and the Treaty of Versailles. By 1938, Hitler’s annexation of Austria had gathered support from Nazis in both Austria and Germany for a union of the two countries.

<u>It was the period of 1934 when a Pro-Nazi group made its attempt to overthrow the Government of Austria and this coup was planned in Germany with assistance from Hitler as well as other German officials. </u>Austria’s chancellor was assassinated in this attempt by that group but they were not able to gain control over Austria when military leaders of Austria took back their support and Nazi’s were not hoping this. It was in year 1935, when Hitler Publicly said that he does not intends to interfere in internal matters of Austria but after three years he again changed his stand on Austria and arranged a meeting with new chancellor of Austria. <u>Hitler demanded new chancellor that he should appoint members who belong to Nazi party of Austria to his cabinet and he denies his commands then Austria may have to face military invasion from Germany. </u>New Chancellor of Austria rejected of demands made by Hitler and organized a Voting throughout his country and asked his people to vote whether they want to live as Independent nation or as a part of third Reich. <u>When Hitler got to know this, he ordered Military invasion from Germany to Austria but to avoid bloodshed, The Austrian chancellor resigned.  </u>
