Alright, distribute the seven to the x and the 2, making your equation 7x+14-4. All you have to do is combine like terms and get 7x+10.

Find the scale of the sides. 

40/5=8 (the longer side is 8 times bigger than the shorter one)

3*8= 24

2x+10=24

Subtract 10 on both sides.

2x=14

Divide by two on both sides.

x=7
