Indians wanted independence from the British because British rule was repressive: not giving Indian people freedom of speech, people's rule, freedom for democracy and freedom from non-payment of taxes, etc. Indians in the movement for independence clear demonstrated the will of the people. India gained independence from the British Empire only by 1947.
