The main purpose was to explain to foreign nations why the colonies had chosen to separate themselves from Great Britain. 
The Declaration of Independence was signed when the Revolutionary war began.  
The Declaration of Independence also stand for equal rights where all men are created equal and are entitled to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness"
