Each of these words and phrases indicate that something important is happening. For example "The immediate pressure of necessity" makes the reader want to know what pressures are the people under where they need to make decisions based on necessity. Also the lines "their only escape from the destruction that...creeps upon them" shows that destruction is coming. Do they survive the destruction? What is happening? This all creates the feeling of suspense.
