Anarel [89]

The purpose of making the second paragraph a single sentence is one of timing. It sets a quick pace with no interruptions. This is intended to mirror the actual experience of walking into the warehouse and looking at the slaves being sold. In this way, the author wants you to imagine the situation the way he is describing it.

The author uses the lists "husbands, wives..." and "sold, leased..." for a couple different purposes. One is similar to the previous one: to create a certain pace. The author provides several quick and short options in a row, which mimics the quickness, confusion and overload of sights when walking into the warehouse. Although the behaviour of the seller is calm, the mind of the viewer is going quickly as it considers the implications of the scene. The second one is to highlight the reality of the slaves. By giving you all the options, he shows that no matter what your condition was, you were sold in the same way and with no concern for your individuality. Finally, the author also gives us these lists of characteristics as factual information that describes the condition of the slaves.

What is the "Ransom of Red Chief's" cultural context?
zhannawk [14.2K]

Answer:

two petty criminals looking for an easy two thousand dollars, hatch a plot to kidnap and hold for ransom Johnny, the 10-year-old son of Ebenezer Dorset, a wealthy pillar of the community. They pick up the boy and take him to a cave hideout, but there the tables are turned. Calling himself "Red Chief" in a fantasy game of cowboys and Indians, the boy drives both men crazy—but particularly Bill. With nonsensical prattle, childish demands and mild physical abuse, the boy demands they entertain him, refusing to return to his home even when they release him from his captivity out of desperation to be rid of his antics. Nonplussed by this unexpected reaction to their crime, the outlaws write a ransom letter to the boy's father, lowering the requested ransom from two thousand dollars to fifteen hundred. Unfortunately, old man Dorset, who knows that his boy is a terror, rejects their demand and instead offers to take the boy off their hands if they pay him $250. Bruised, disheartened, and their hopes reduced by the trials of parenting, Bill and Sam hand over the cash and trick the unhappy boy into returning to his wealthy father. The elder Dorset restrains his son long enough for the chastened duo to flee town, never to return.

Sindrei [870]

One reason that a company INVESTS IN training for its workers is to increase their skills and KNOWLEDGE, allowing them to perform their jobs more efficiently. This investment in human capital leads workers to be more PRODUCTIVE. For example, training workers on a new machine will make them work more EFFICIENTLY and become more PRODUCTIVE.

Countries can also invest in educaiton to increase HUMAN CAPITAL. By investing in education, governments can increase the number of WELL-EDUCATED workers in the country.

Having a well-educated workforce can lead COMPANIES to open businesses and factories in a community. Increased jobs and output can lead to ECONOMIC GROWTH for a community. Increased jobs and output lead to a higher GDP and shift the PPC to the RIGHT.
