Both the Monroe doctrine and the Adams-Onis Treaty limited the powers of the European colonial powers on the American continent.

The Adams-Onis Treaty, signed in 1821 between the United States and Spain, gave America possession of Florida, as well as limited Spanish territorial aspirations in Louisiana. In this way, the Spanish influence in North America was limited, which would later be totally destroyed with the independence of Mexico.

For its part, the Monroe Doctrine, adopted in 1823, was a foreign policy stance by which the United States announced that they would consider any European intervention on the American continent as an aggression against the nation, thus guaranteeing the young independence of the Latin American nations, while avoiding the resurgence of European colonial powers on the continent.
