Characterization is the way the author presents the character's traits to the reader. The author can do this either directly or indirectly. Direct characterization is when the author specifically tells the reader the character's traits. In the answer, the author specifically tells the reader how tall and strong Boxer is. The reader also learns about the stripe on his nose. Indirect characterization is when the author "shows" the reader the character's traits. For example, if the author had said that Boxer could pull a tractor-trailer truck, we would be shown that he is strong.
