To solve this problem we will use substitution. 

Calculations 

⇒ Lets solve for the variable x in  x+3y=5 

→ x+3y = 5

⊄ Subtract 3y from both sides ⊅

→ x = 5−3y 

Substitute x=5−3y into x−3y =−1 

⇒ Start with the original equation 

x−3y=−1

⇒ Let x=5−3y

5−3y−3y=−1

⇒ Simplify

5−6y=−1

Solve for y in 5−6y=−1 

y=1 

Substitute y=1 into x=5−3y 

x=2 

Therefore, 

x=2

y=1
