Many wars have been fought in the past over ownership and control of land. However, World War I was not fought for this reason.

World War I came about due to the tension and alliances of power. It was not about any ownership or control of any certain piece of land but instead who would be in control or dominate the land. It is like two children fighting over a toy neither child wants; they just do not want the other child to have the toy either.

After the middle ages the church lost it's power.   Both with political leaders and the people.  

Henery VIII wanted an annulment, when not granted he started his own church.  But took a massive amount of land from the church.  
Made a massive amount of money by selling church positions, to the nobility.  

In terms of education.  Middle ages highly illiterate.  Renaissance literate came back to the people.  Particularly because of the printing press.
