Why did Bilbo not kill Gollum?
Bilbo, who is still invisible, follows him, thereby discovering the way out. Gollum, who can smell Bilbo, blocks his way. Bilbo thinks of killing Gollum, but decides it would not be fair, because Bilbo is invisible and Gollum is unarmed.
at this point in time when he gave his address he was talking about freeing enslaved and oppressed (communist) countries and how we are honor bound to do so because that's what the US was founded on.
