Which of the following sentences is correct? A. A phrase has a subject and verb, but a clause does not B. a phrase is a group of
Andrew [12]
A phrase is a group of words that can serve to describe or modify one or more words in a sentence, but it lacks a subject. It cannot stand on its own and would not make any sense unless included in a complete sentence. A clause, however, contains both a subject and a predicate (verb). An independent clause is a complete sentence that stands on its own, while a dependent clause is not a complete sentence but still contains a subject and predicate. Thus, the correct answer above is C, "A clause has a subject and verb, but a phrase does not."

From the Supreme Court case Plessy V. Ferguson, 1896: It is true that the question of the proportion of colored blood necessary
Sergeu [11.5K]

D) Different states have different precedents regarding what defines a white person as opposed to a black person.

The excerpt specifically says that what defines a person as being black "is a difference of opinion in the different states." In NC "any visible admixture of black blood" defines a person as a black person. In OH, "it depends upon the preponderance of blood. In Michigan and Virginia, "white blood must only be in the proportion of three-fourths".  This shows that there is not a best way to define race. Also, B is not correct because Michigan and Virginia use the same definition so they are in agreement at least. Option C is not correct because some states do not agree with this.
