<span>Ancient Roman society was organized on a class and gender system. The various classes depended upon birth. However there was an upward mobility for the lower classes such as a slave being freed, a member of the proletariat being enrolled in the equite class, or an equite being appointed to the patrician class. Gender played a certain part in Roman society as there were activities that were not appropriate for women and activities that were not appropriate for men.
