The Battle of the Coral Sea (4-8 May, 1942), was a major naval battle between the Imperial Japanese Navy and the air and navy forces from Australia and the United States. The battle took place in Pacific Theater of World War II.

It was the first battle where air carriers engaged each other, the first air-sea battle in the history.

The battle broke Japanese defenses in the South Pacific and was a significant contributing factor to Japan's ultimate surrender in World War II. The battle left the Japanese without enough planes to cover the ground attack of Port Moresby, resulting in a strategic Allied victory.
