16x + 6y =305 -------------(1a)

(2) x (3) :
18x + 6y = 339 -------------(2a)

(2a) - (1a) :
2x = 34
x = 17 ---------- sub into (2)
6(17) + 2y = 113
102 + 2y = 113
2y = 113 - 102
2y = 11
y = 5.5


x = $17, y = $5.50

Each gallon of paint costs $17 and each brush costs $5.50
