Bacteria. This word has been in the news and textbooks a lot lately. We know that some species of bacteria have evolved a resist

ance to antibiotics and are difficult if not impossible to kill. Instead they are responsible for some potentially deadly illnesses and infections. We also know that recent biochemical discoveries have lead scientists down a path to completely change how life on Earth is classified, starting with the bacteria. We have moved from a 5-kingdome system to a 3-domain, 6-kingdom system of classification. All bacteria are still known to be prokaryotes, but we know now that they differ biochemically. This phylogenic tree shows the changes in bacterial species from the ancestral species to the most current split in the modern classification system. This tree supports the theory that A) speciation results in biodiversity. B) natural selection favors the fittest. C) within a population, variation exists. D) extinction is the fate of the species that cannot adapt.

Why does a pH of 5 produce high ATP synthase activity, but a pH of 3 and 9 very low ATP synthase activity?
xz_007 [3.2K]

Answer:

ATP synthase works best at a pH of 5, but changes in the pH of the medium can alter its enzymatic activity, decreasing it.

Explanation:

Enzymes are specialized proteins that contribute to biochemical reactions occurring faster, decreasing the activation energy.

Under ideal conditions of temperature and pH, enzymes can work at their maximum capacity, but changes in these conditions can affect the speed with which an enzyme acts.

ATP synthase, an important enzyme for ATP synthesis and oxidative phosphorylation, works best at a pH of 5 (weak acid), but as the acidity or alkalinity of the medium increases, enzymatic activity decreases.

The results of a laboratory test show that a type of bacteria called E. coli is living in the digestive tract of an animal. Do t
Vinil7 [7]

Answer:

E. coli is a bacteria not a parasite. It is not harmful to animals

Explanation:

Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria normally live in the intestines of people and animals. Most E. coli are harmless and actually are an important part of a healthy human intestinal tract. However, some E. coli are pathogenic, meaning they can cause illness, either diarrhea or illness outside of the intestinal tract. The types of E. coli that can cause diarrhea can be transmitted through contaminated water or food, or through contact with animals or persons.

it does not cause ill-

ness in animals, but the animals can

serve as carriers of the bacteria. These

bacteria can be found in cattle, sheep,

pigs, deer, dogs and poultry. Infected

animals, especially young ones, can

shed the bacteria in their feces. Cattle

are the main carriers.
