- wages and safety standards were really low.

At that time, the government still hasn't involved much in the regulation of minimum wage and workplace safety. So many of the workers died from hunger or workplaces accident.

- unsanitary neighborhood

The development of knowledge in health and medicine still hasn't much developed during that time. Often cases, many poor workers we're also forced to live together in a very small/cramped spaces

- tension are high among different group of people.

At that time, racism run extremely rampant between local and immigrants from different countries.
