Two of the major innovations that helped jazz spread to remote corners in the U.S. are the increase in popularity of the phonograph or record and the distribution of the music via radio waves. Of course, precursors to these events gaining popularity, was the mobilization of the jazz community from New Orleans to other urban centers like New York and Chicago. And around the time, the distribution of a more suitable in-home piano, was also helping to increase the amount that jazz could be heard.
