Answer: 20 square feet (choice A)

The base is AB = 5 ft because AB = CD. Recall that opposite sides in a parallelogram are congruent and parallel.

The height is DE = 4 ft

Area of a parallelogram is base times height. It's effectively the same formula as a rectangle (any rectangle is a parallelogram, but not the other way around).

So,

area of parallelogram = base * height = 5*4 = 20

note: the base is always perpendicular to the height

another thing to point out: the info AE = 2 ft isn't used at all. It's probably put in there to distract or to make students try to find AD using the pythagorean theorem. Knowing the length of AD will not help find the area of the parallelogram. Though now that I think about it, you could divide this parallelogram into a rectangle and two triangles. Then find the area of each small piece to add them up to get the final answer. I show what I mean in the attached image below. However, it's much easier to use the formula area = base*height.

Describe lengths of three segments that could not be used to form a triangle. Segments with lengths of 5 in., 5 in., and ______
Vesna [10]

Answer:

c = 11

Step-by-step explanation:

Given

Let the three sides be a, b and c

Such that:

a = b= 5

Required

Find c such that a, b and c do not form a triangle

To do this, we make use of the following triangle inequality theorem

a + b > c

a + c > b

b + c > a

To get a valid triangle, the above inequalities must be true.

To get an invalid triangle, at least one must not be true.

Substitute: a = b= 5

5 + 5 > c ===> 10 > c

5 + c > 5 ===> c > 5 - 5 ===> c > 0

5 + c > 5 ===> c > 5 - 5 ===> c > 0

The results of the inequality is: 10 > c and c > 0

Rewrite as: c > 0 and c < 10

0 < c < 10

This means that, the values of c that make a valid triangle are 1 to 9 (inclusive)

Any value outside this range, cannot form a triangle

So, we can say:

c = 11, since no options are given

Yesterday, Jack drove 43.5 miles. He used 11 gallons of gasoline. What is the unit rate for miles per gallon?
Alexxx [7]

Answer:

the unit rate for miles per gallons = 3.95 miles

Step-by-step explanation:

Let x be the unit rate for miles per gallon.

Given:

Jack drove 43.5 miles. He used 11 gallons of gasoline.

Find the unit rate for miles per gallon?

Jack used 11 gallons of gasoline for 43.5 miles.

11 gallons = 43.5 miles

The unit rate for miles per gallon is

unit rate of gallons = total miles divided by total used gallons of gasoline

x=\frac{43.5}{11}

x=3.95miles

Therefore, the unit rate for miles per gallons is 3.95 miles.
