Fungi are eukaryotic organisms that act as the main decomposers in the environment. Examples are yeasts, molds and mushrooms. Black truffles are aromatic edible fungi that belong to the Ascomycota phylum.

Mushrooms belong to the Basidiomycota phylum. Mushrooms are saprophytes, as they have no chlorophyll and obtain their food from metabolizing nonliving organic matter.

Edible mushrooms include commercially raised mushrooms like button mushrooms, portobello mushrooms, straw mushrooms, oyster mushrooms, shiitakes, enokitake, etc and wild-harvested mushrooms such as black trumpets, milk mushrooms, porcini mushrooms, morels, chanterelles, etc.

Poisonous mushrooms include amanita, galerina, conocybe, lepiota, etc. They contain deadly poison which causes a range of reactions such as hallucinations, allergic reactions, digestive problems, severe organ failure, and death.
