The Radical Republicans helped pass laws that protected the African Americans, protected them militarily, and also protected them economically (built towns, schools, shops, etc for them)

The main way in which the Radical Republicans tried to protect the rights of african americans was by ensuring that the military was stationed in the South to overlook the transition process for many African Americans into society. Unfortunately this ultimately failed.
