Christopher Columbus was a Christian. His journey was not motivated by religion, but by a desire to explore new land and obtain new riches for the Crown. However, he was still a Christian man, and he believed it best for everyone to be Christian as well. This led him to try to convert the Native people he met in his journeys, a pursuit that was approved by the Spanish royal family.

It was unthinkable that a person in western Europe could be other than a devout Catholic. He, Columbus, was motivated by religion in his voyages. The natives he met were required, on pain of death, to become Christians.
