Effectively, there is a turning point in Candy's life after his dog was shot when reading "Of mice and men".

When Candy's dog was shot, he experienced different negative feelings because of the strong bond there was between them; not only he didn't want his dog to be shot because he ultimately lost his only friend, but also some other feelings arose just like regret and guilt mainly because he gets to express that he should have shot the dog himself (instead of Carlson) for the pet was also old. Therefore, there might be a negative effect  when talking about his relationship with the others because his only true friend was gone, triggering a deep feeling of actual loneliness.
