The lactose analog isopropyl-b-D-thio-galactoside (IPTG) is often used to regulate gene expression systems in bacteria. IPTG doe

s not act as a substrate for b-galactosidase, but can bind to, and inactivate, the repressor. In this case, IPTG serves as a(n)_______________.
A. inducer.
B. repressor.
C. effector.
D. operon.

Answer:

Option A. inducer.

Explanation:

The lac operon is an inducible operon. The presence of lactose allows the gene expression for the metabolism of lactose. The IPTG mimics the structure of allolactose. The allolactose is the direct inducer of the gene of lac operon. Lactose by converting to allolactose act as a inducer. The repressor in the lac operon binds with the operator region and thus inhibits the process of transcription.

The allolactose binds with repressor and thus inhibits its binding to operator thereby initiating the process of transcription. As the IPTG mimics allolactose so it binds with repressor and act as a inducer. Thus, option A is correct.

Halobacterium has a photosynthetic membrane that appears purple. its photosynthetic action spectrum is the inverse of the action
a_sh-v [17]

Yellow- Green Wavelength of light at peak absorption of 565nm.

Halobacterium is known to be a member of Archaea and they thrive in very salty environment such as Great Salt lake and Dead Sea. Halobacteria under the process of photosynthesis with chlorophyll and they make their ATP from the sunlight using bacteriorhodopsin and halorhodopsin as photosynthetic pigments.

However, photosensory pigements found in Halabacterium were:

1. photosystem 565 which is used to respond to yellow –green light in other for cell to find optimum conditions for ATP synthesis and photophosphorylation and they have peak absorbtion at 565nm.

2. Photosystem 370 nm appears to be responsible for the protective avoidance of blue/UV light.
